Parlez-Vous Français?

Yes we have finally made it to language school. School began Aug. 25 with oral placement test. There are 3 basic levels (Débutante, Intermediate, Advanced). For those with a good base of French, there is an immersion level which is a fast paced level, highlighting the basics while going more in-depth. To my surprise this is where I was placed. Kathy was place in the Débutante level but soon discovered she was able to go much quicker. One of the advantages of a small school is that they have allowed Kathy to do intermediate level at the same time. Bethel is a 2yr. Bible school to meet the needs of the Quebec youth, preparing them for cégep (jr. college).

Are we still in Canada ?

We thought public education was free! Imagine our surprise when we tried to register the kids in school and they handed us a bill for $3900.00 each. Fortunately there was a small clause exempting Canadian citizens this year. Daniel had a rough start having never been in a classroom setting, let alone in another language. His teacher also did not know what to do with him. She was replaced by a supply teacher for a couple of weeks that took up Daniel's cause. We praise the Lord he is now adjusting fairly well. Jessica and Stephen are also doing quite well and beginning to speak some French. Stephen read and understood most of the story in his reader the other night. Pray for them during the next few weeks as they stand their ground in a culture that puts such a great emphasis on Halloween.

What do you do anyway?

Our day begins about 7am with breakfast and morning devotions. By 8:30 the kids are on the bus to school and Kathy's classes have begun. My morning consists of auditing Bible courses and homework. 12:30 is lunch and Bible reading with the bible school students for pronunciation. At 1:30 I begin classes until 4:30. Kathy uses this time for her home and housework. Supper is usually at 6pm and followed by helping the boys with their homework. It is often harder than ours and takes until bedtime 8pm. If you want to be humbled just pray for the first time in a foreign language! November 2nd I will be sharing our ministry at the local church in French.

Where to from here?

We are planning to head back to Ontario the end of April then pack for Chad in London, during May and June. This will also be a time for final meetings and good-byes. Though we are clear to go, we are considerably short of on-going support and will have consumed the capital given us by the end of our first term. We do thank you for your faithful prayers. Their effects have been clearly seen and felt in our lives.
